McAllen, TX β January 20, 2022 βUnidos Contra La Diabetes (UCD) announced it received a $25K grant from the Raul Tijerina, Jr. Foundation to improve Diabetes Prevention efforts in the Rio Grande Valley. The project will impact four RGV counties and raise awareness and prevention about diabetes, COVID-19 and the flu.
UCDβs project will deliver health kits containing health education to partner organizations that conduct Diabetes Prevention efforts across Starr, Hidalgo, Cameron, and Willacy counties. The goal of the kitsΒ is toΒ promote health awareness andΒ maintainΒ a safe and healthy lifestyle. The health kits will include information on Diabetes, Latino nutrition healthy food choices, reducing sugary beverages and information linking them to resources in the community. Additionally, the kits will include education on Covid-19 and flu vaccinations, as well as personal protective equipment items for participants to stay healthy throughout the current pandemic.
Right now, more than ever, we as a community need to work together to help prevent Diabetes. We know that Type 2 Diabetes is preventable, and we need to work with our partners to help prevent COVID-19 in our families. This funding will help our community with education resources and serve to improve the daily lives of the residents in the Rio Grande Valley.
