Prediabetes and type 2 diabetes share nearly all the same risk factors. If you’ve already been diagnosed with prediabetes, that increases your likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes. You may be at risk for both conditions if you:
Have overweight or obesity
Are 45 years old or older
Have a close family member (parent or sibling) with type 2 diabetes
Are physically active fewer than three times per week
Have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
Had gestational diabetes during pregnancy or gave birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
Are African American, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian, or Alaska Native. Certain Asian American and Pacific Islander groups also face increased risk

Lower Your Risk
Some things that raise your risk for diabetes—like your age or family health history—can’t be changed. But there are other things you can do to help stay healthy and lower your chances of getting prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, or gestational diabetes.
Here are a few healthy habits that can help:
Move your body more (like playing outside, walking, or riding your bike)
Eat more healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
Lose some weight if a doctor says you need to
Even small changes, done a little at a time, can make a big difference. It’s never too early—or too late—to start making healthy choices!
