Diabetes is a complex problem that defies easy solutions. The steering committee sought to understand the assets, the needs in the community, and the opportunity for impact in order to decide how to best create change. The steering committee decided to focus on diabetes prevention because they perceived a need to build a long-term foundation for a healthier community in the RGV, and saw an opportunity to make generational change by changing systems and mindsets. The committee also recognized that while there are currently existing efforts and significant resources dedicated to diabetes management, there is still great need and opportunity to prevent diabetes before it occurs.
