I. Introduction
Unidos Contra La Diabetes (UCD) is a collective impact initiative focused on preventing and reducing type 2 diabetes in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV). We are centered on awareness and prevention, and want to initiate the setting of minimum nutrition standards for consumables given away at community events and health fairs. In order to change the prevalence of diabetes, we must echo a principle of good health and nutrition, always. In the RGV, there is 1 in 3 adults diagnosed with diabetes, and in Region One, 2 in 25
children are at a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes. This is a concern. As partners who are committed to the health and wellbeing of our community, when our messages are not reflected in our actions, we are sending mixed and confusing messages. We want to serve as a catalyst of change when we organize or participate in community events and health fairs to make sure that unhealthy consumables are not being distributed. We need to commit to lead by example as community leaders by enhancing and promoting a culture of good health and nutrition.
II. Policy Purpose
Unidos Contra La Diabetes will heighten the awareness among community partners and organizations of offering nutritious consumables and other items given away at community events and health fairs in order to center the message of the prevention of type 2 diabetes with the actions projected at various events.
III. Policy Statement
Unidos Contra La Diabetes will develop and implement and ask community partners and organizations to help enhance this guideline as a pathway to collectively bring awareness to the importance of echoing our messages of good health and nutrition with the consumables provided at community events and health fairs.
IV. Procedures
The following guidelines will be provided to all organizations sponsoring community events and or health fairs.
